Capital for Native Americans


In addition to the agencies listed below which provide capital resources, there are also technical assistance providers for Native Americans listed under that section.

Bureau of Indian Affairs
There are several loan and grant programs designed to benefit Native American business. The Bureau of Indian Affairs runs a loan guarantee program for Native American entrepreneurs that does not have strong collateral (real property) requirements, but a tribe must sponsor a loan application. The BIA also makes limited small business grants available. The BIA guarantees loans and makes grants available to tribally owned businesses as well.

Administration for Native Americans
This is a federal program run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that provides grants and other assistance for the technical and capacity building of tribes towards the goals of social and economic self-sufficiency. This agency is located in Washington D.C.

The New Mexico Community Development Loan Fund.
This nonprofit provides direct loans to benefit low-income entrepreneurs who cannot qualify for bank loans. The Loan Fund works with all kinds of people, but has prioritized making loans to Native Americans.

Navajo Tribe, Navajo Peer Lending Fund, Pueblo and Apache Tribes, etc.
Various tribal governments may make capital available to tribal members for business development under varying circumstances. Many tribes have unique economic development programs. Tribal web pages are listed on the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Home Page

Rural Development Administration of USDA
RURAL BUSINESS ENTERPRISE GRANTS are available to Indian tribes for economic development projects.
